fluency without literacy

Welcome to the age of fluency without literacy.

n.b. I am not going to use AI to write this article, at all, no proofreading, nothing, so please excuse any errors, omissions and typos.  They are the result of a human being trying to write something.

Premise 1: AI has changed, and will continue to change, things in society. I think we can all agree on that. 

Premise 2: One of these changes is that people can now send the results of AI prompts without any understanding of what is being discussed or debated. Fluent exchanges are flying around the Internet and the actual substance of the debate, or the underlying reason for the discussion, may be completely missed. 

Expertise is being swamped by content generation by software tools. 

I can debate how to heal a sick cat with a veterinarian and I have ZERO training in small animal medicine.  I can create a fluent argument and not understand anything I am saying by relying on AI tools.  But the veterinarian knows, because I won't even understand the points of the debate that are lost to subtlety and nuance by an expert.  However, I can overwhelm them with the sheer volume of my AI-generated response, causing them to put down their device and shake there head. I suppose that could be considered "winning an argument".

I am wrong a lot.  I am proud of it.  I think, as a species, we are going to need to lean on trying to understand each other before we rely on LLMs to argue a friend or colleagues position.
